Loan rates up
CONCERNS about policy tightening in China had pushed up interest rates on informal loans, a barometer of funding cost for smaller businesses, central bank officials said over the weekend.

Zhang Jianhua, head of research at the People’s Bank of China, said a central bank survey completed in the first quarter of 2010 showed lending rates fell from 2008 as China implemented loose monetary policy to counter the global financial crisis.

“But since then, rates have been creeping up as the central bank started to tighten liquidity in the second half of 2009,” he said, while noting the central bank did not officially announce a shift in monetary policy until late last year.

“The lending rates must be higher now,” he said, citing anecdotal evidence because his research team has not conducted any new nationwide survey since March 2010.

In Jiangsu Province, active borrowing from individuals and companies — as opposed to those from banks and special lending entities — helped push the average one-year rate up moderately to 13.8 percent in the second quarter of 2010 from 13.3 percent three months earlier, according to Li Xiangning, a director from the central bank’s Nanjing branch.

Private lending is an important channel for smaller firms in China, who are often neglected by big banks despite regulatory efforts to guide more loans to them.

Willingness to offer such loans is also strong as there are limited investment channels for funds in private hands. Such activities are particularly active in provinces including Zhejiang, Hainan, Hunan, Shandong and Shanxi.

Zhang said private loans stood at around 2.4 trillion yuan at the end of March in 2010, accounting for 5.6 percent of the country’s total lending, down from 8.5 percent two years earlier.

Although mostly without guarantees, the default rate of such loans is very low and still declining, central bank surveys show.

Inter beats Parma 5-2

DEJAN STANKOVIC scored a hat trick as Inter Milan ended a run of four Serie A games without a win to beat Parma 5-2 Sunday.

Hernan Crespo gave Parma an early lead against one of his former clubs, but Inter was soon 3-1 ahead thanks to two goals from Stankovic and another from Esteban Cambiasso.

Crespo grabbed his second before halftime, but in the second period Thiago Motta came off the bench to make it four for the home side before Stankovic completed his treble.

Parma hit the frame of the goal on two occasions and Inter goalkeeper Luca Castelazzi twice denied Crespo his hat trick goal.

“We came out slowly and conceded an early goal,” Stankovic said. “But we reacted in the right way with our goals.”

Second-placed Lazio was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Catania and missed a chance to close the gap on leader AC Milan.

Milan leads the table with 30 points, while Lazio is second with 27.

Juventus is third with 24 points, ahead of Napoli in fourth place on goal difference. Inter and Palermo have 23 points.

I thought I was knew

Traffic control for celebrations
SHENZHEN police will impose traffic controls between 7:30 and 9 p.m. today, forbidding vehicles from entering roads around the Citizens’ Center in Futian District during the fireworks display.

Vehicles will not be allowed to enter the area south of Fuzhong Road (the section between Yitian and Jintian roads), west of Jintian Road (from Fuzhong Road to Fuhua Road 1), east of Yitian Road (from Fuzhong Road to Fuhua Road ) and north of Fuhua Road 1 (between Yitian and Jintian roads).

Traffic on Fuzhong Road, Fuzhong Road 3, Shennan Thoroughfare (between Xinzhou Flyover and Caitian Flyover), Jintian Road and Fuhua Road 1 will be diverted to other roads, police said.

More than 700 police officers will be deployed to control traffic during the fireworks display, which is expected to attract 1 million spectators.

The Citizens’ Center station on Metro Line 4 will be closed during the show. Train intervals on Metro Line 1 will be shortened to every 4.5 minutes from seven minutes and on Metro Line 4 to seven minutes from 10 minutes, to disperse passengers quickly.

In addition, 61 bus routes will extend services to 10:30 p.m. and bus companies will set up 13 temporary bus stops on Shennan Thoroughfare in front of the Citizens’ Center square and another five stops along Hongli Road, the Shenzhen transport commission said Saturday.

The commission expects those living near Lianhua Hill Park to walk to the display to relieve the strain on buses.

My Little Devil
I am a mother, that can be loosly translated into I am multitasking miracles of nature, right?

Without even noticed, my baby has grown up into a talking, walking little
wonder now. He plays, he jabbers, he shrieks and laughs and is forever
getting into something which he shouldn’t. We never dare to take our
gaze from him for a single minute or he would find something else to
get into---like poke a dog with a stick and tragically end up with
being bitten----such things you would never know.

My little devil is very picky about food. He refused to take a bite at
anything which failed to ignite his appetite. Starving him is out. He
always prefers hunger than a make-do meal. Ok, I admit that I am a
lousy cook. Considering the fact that we eat out a lot, and his dad
never put his foot in the kitchen, the blame is really not entire on
me. Still it hurts a lot to watch him to spit out whatever I cooked, no
matter how I coaxed, allured, and threatened.

To avoid starving him to death, I have to re-adjust my ambitions for life.
Now becoming a good cook has become my first priority---God help me.

Little devil is really good at manipulating his poor mummy. Every time we took
him out, he demanded to be held by me, and refused to be held by anyone
else. If he shrieked in protest, I probably would take heart to put him
down. But no, every time he would wail in his helpless, piteous tone:
Ma Ma Bao, Ma Ma Bao… and clung to me like a monkey with both arms and
legs. So forget about my back hurt like hell, forget that I was
exhausted and dripping with sweat, I had no choice but scooping him up.
